Originating from France, this soup has a storied history that dates back to Roman times. Traditionally enjoyed by peasants, French Onion Soup has evolved into a gourmet dish, gracing the menus of fine dining establishments. Its unique blend of textures and flavors has made it a timeless classic that continues to warm hearts and stomachs.

Ingredient List

– 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
– 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
– 1 teaspoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 teaspoon black pepper
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 8 cups beef broth (or a mix of beef and chicken broth)
– 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
– 1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
– Baguette, sliced
– 2 cups grated Gruyère cheese (or Swiss cheese)
– Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions to Make the Recipe

1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and stir to coat them in the fat. Cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to soften.

2. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions to help with caramelization. Continue to cook the onions over medium-low heat for 30-40 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are deep golden brown and caramelized.

3. Add the minced garlic, salt, and pepper to the pot. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

4. Pour in the dry white wine (if using) and scrape the bottom of the pot to deglaze, releasing any flavorful bits stuck to the bottom. Let the wine simmer for about 5 minutes until reduced.

5. Add the beef broth and thyme to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 20-30 minutes to meld the flavors. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary.

6. While the soup simmers, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.

7. To serve, ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls. Top each bowl with a slice of toasted baguette and sprinkle generously with grated cheese.

8. Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Watch carefully to prevent burning.

9. Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve hot. Enjoy your Classic French Onion Soup, a true taste of France!
